Is starting a business in a turbulent economic time a good idea?
During times of economic turbulence the last thing that most people would consider doing is starting a business. It sounds perfectly logical to say that you will wait until the economy is stronger to start your business. However this may not actually be a good idea, there is opportunity in turbulent economic times if you know where to look for it.
Clearly whether or not starting a business in turbulent economic times is a good idea or not is going to depend in large part on what kind of business you are starting. There are some businesses that do better during these times than others. It will also depend a great deal on the management of the company. There is certainly opportunity during turbulent times if you can build a company that can take advantage of the instability. In large part that requires that your business be innovative and efficient. If you have that then it can be an excellent time to start a business.
The reason that it can be a good idea to start a business during turbulent times is that big companies tend to find it difficult to change the way that they do things. This means that they tend to suffer more during turbulent times than smaller companies. They have a huge investment in doing things a certain way and if they are required to change the way that they do things this can create a huge problem for them. A new company on the other hand that was set up from the start to take advantage of the new business conditions could steal business away from these big companies.
It could actually be argued that if you are entering a field that is dominated by big companies that periods of economic turbulence are in fact the best time to start a business. During periods of a stable economy the big companies will largely be able to keep you out. They are able to use their dominant position to make it very difficult for anybody else to enter the field. However they will find this much harder to do during turbulent times when they need to change themselves.
Obviously if you are going to start a business to take advantage of turbulent economic conditions your business has to be able to deal with these conditions better than your competitors. That means that you have to be much more efficient and innovative. This is not all that hard to do if you have a small company but if you are planning to start a big company it could be a problem. The main thing is that you have to make sure that you have a company that is able to change the way that they do things quickly so that you can adapt to the changing circumstances. Otherwise somebody else is going to come along and take business from you.
